Prone position as innovation for treatment of patients on ICU with acute respiratory distress syndrome due to COVID-19: An integrative review

GABRIELA P G FARIA, Isabel F Cruz

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effects of prone positioning as supportive care in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome treated in the Intensive Care Unit. Methodology: An integrative review was carried out using the PICOT strategy, and the databases of PubMed and Lilacs, with the descriptors: “nursing” AND “prone position” AND “COVID-19”, in Portuguese and English. Results: According to this study findings, the prone position may be associated with improved oxygenation, lower mortality and intubation rate, and this position is recommended for patients with COVID-19. Conclusion: It must be considered that it presents potential risks and complications. In which, protocols, guidelines and training are essential for the nursing staff to minimize the risk of adverse events during or after prone positioning. And with the recent COVID-19 pandemic, more research is needed before definitive guidelines and recommendations can be made.
