The nurse in the prevention of infection of central venous catheters - systematic literature review

Abstract


Background: The central venous catheters are devices of great importance in health care, especially in intensive care units, the increase in infections related to this procedure is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, prolongation of hospital stay and increased costs of patient care.
Objective: The aim of this paper is to identify the scientific production of nursing, using the PICO strategy to determine the effectiveness of the use of transparent plastic film sterile bandage the site of catheter insertion, after antisepsis to reduce the incidence of nosocomial infection associated with the use of central venous catheters in comparison to the use of the dressing with gauze and adhesive tape, after antisepsis.
Methodology: To understand the purpose were researched scientific articles published in indexed for databases, Pubmed and Medline from 2005 to 2009, analyzing its applicability in daily practice.
Conclusion: The results demonstrated the need to maintain continuing education to health professionals in order to prevent infection and improve care delivery of high complexity. The maximum sterile barrier proved to be an effective and best practice. On some issues will require further investigation for a proper approach of infections related to vascular catheters.
