Effectiveness of endotracheal suction and upper airway in the prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia: a systematic review of literature

Suelen Miranda Mendonça, Isabel CF da Cruz

Abstract

The mechanical ventilation equipment is not prescribed by a nurse, but it is up to him assist in the process of decision making, identifying immediate risk factors, signs and symptoms that may lead the client to this condition. This is a computerized literature search, whose search was conducted in an electronic database of nursing based on the PICO strategy. The research aims to answer the clinical question flaming: On patient of high complexity, which is the effectiveness of nurse prescribing endotracheal aspiration and upper airway for patients in use of mechanical ventilation per unit in the treatment and prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia? Ten articles were used for the study. Was sought in this study the best scientific evidence to answer the clinical question and present the best scientific evidence. Completing the study was contraindicated the use of physiological solution on endotracheal suctioning because the risks outweigh the benefits. No difference was related to better outcome as the aspiration of an open or closed. It is suggested financial investment and research into new products in the market, continuing education, creation of protocols and knowledge exchange among the multidisciplinary team.
