Rosângela do Nascimento Elisiário Bento, Isabel CF de Cruz

Abstract

Background: Ineffective management of postoperative cardiac surgery pain may result in complications such as deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, coronary ischemia, myocardial infarction, pneumonia, poor wound healing and insomnia. Objective: Review the interprofessional nursing practices based on evidence in the use of non-pharmacological methods for the management of acute pain in patients in the postoperative period of cardiac surgery. Methods: Integrative literature review of the Medline, Lilacs, Scopus and Cinahl databases between 2011 and 2017. Results: Ten studies that met the established inclusion criteria, with a predominance of randomized clinical trials, level of evidence 1B were analyzed. The main non-pharmacological methods found in the studies were cold therapy, music therapy and massage therapy. The use of these therapies significantly reduced the pain intensity in the postoperative period of open heart surgery. Conclusion: The main findings of this study provide scientific evidence supporting the use of cold therapy, music therapy and massage therapy as effective non-pharmacological methods for the management of acute postoperative heart surgery. These therapies have been shown to be safe, flexible, non-invasive, easy to apply, inexpensive and with no side effects.
